The #1 Reason People Fail At Their Side Hustles
If you’re doing this, you’ll fail as well
If a friend that couldn’t drive told you that they were planning to do a side hustle as an Uber driver you’d probably think they were more than a little crazy. But that’s exactly what many people do when starting side hustles and businesses. They decide to take a driving job when they can’t drive.
Let’s think about this logically. You want to become an Uber driver. Apart from a car, what’s the one thing you need to be able to do? Drive, obviously.
You may even think I’ve gone a little crazy for stating the obvious. Everyone knows that if you want a driving job you need to be able to drive.
OK, here’s another one. Would you apply for a plumbing job if you didn’t have any plumbing skills? Of course, you wouldn’t.
So how about a dropshipping side hustle? Oh yeah, you’ll try that. Millions do. It’s easy right? You’ll be making $10,000 a month in your first month, right?
This is where logic gets completely thrown out of the window. We wouldn’t take an Uber job if we couldn’t drive. We wouldn’t take any regular job unless we had the required experience or relevant skills. But so many will jump at any online venture even if they have zero experience and zero skills.
Why is that? Why do so many think that making money online is so easy that they can make tens of thousands of dollars with zero experience?
The fact is that whatever side hustle you decide to try, you need to have at least some experience or skills. Sure, some side hustles are easier than others and it’s possible to succeed with some more basic skills, but you still need some.
So let’s go back to the dropshipping example. It sounds simple. Set up a site, find some products, run a few ads, and hey presto, the money will come rolling in.
But what do you know about setting up an ecommerce site? Can you build a professional site, integrate all the products, hook up the credit card processing, get the backend to send orders to the warehouse? Of course, you can’t. But that’s ok because you can pay someone to do it.
Great. So what about finding a good niche? You have experience of that, right? No, you don’t. Never mind, you can just pick some random saturated niche. Done.
Now you need some products. Do you have negotiating skills? Do you know how to effectively search for great products that have a decent profit margin? No, you don’t. Never mind, you’ll buy one of those useless plugins that choose random products that no one wants. Even if someone wants them you can’t make a profit from them anyway. But who cares, you’re buying that plugin anyway. Next month you’ll be rich.
What do you mean you don’t have any traffic to your site? Do you mean you forgot that you need to run ads? Never mind, this is your number one skill. What do you mean? You’ve never run ads? Never mind, just throw some ineffective ads together, cross your fingers and hope for the best.
Sure, that will work. The guru promised you. After all, his course was expensive enough.
A couple of grand later and the project is canned.
Never mind, let’s jump into the next crazy idea for which you have zero experience and zero skills.
And that’s it, folks. The reason so many fail is because they try to build a side hustle or business with zero experience and zero skills.
And then they complain it’s a scam. Just like Uber’s a scam because you can’t drive.
It’s not a scam. You just don’t have the skills.
If you want to succeed with your side hustles or your business you need to start something that uses your experience and skills. If you can drive, you could indeed think about becoming an Uber driver. You can also put in the time to learn new skills. But don’t just assume you can make thousands every month without having any idea at all what you’re doing.
