Writing on Medium Isn’t All Roses — My Views Are Down 90%

I’m hoping it’s just a summer slowdown

June is turning into a tough month for me. My views are down around 90% and my stories haven’t been getting much traction lately. It’s not all roses here.

I thought it would be good to post about the hard times of writing here so that new writers don’t think that the only way is up. You have to take the bad with the good.

June started with a bang. On 3rd June I got 4,095 views. That was my best day ever. My earnings were over $100. That’s only the 3rd time I’ve had daily earnings that high.

But then everything started to go downhill. My views today are likely to end up at around 400 or so, so will be down 90% from the 3rd June peak. My reads are down. My fans are down. My claps are down. My new followers are down. My new subscribers are down. My new referrals are down. My earnings are down.

Do you see a pattern there?

Summer slowdown?

I joined medium in October last year, so this is my first summer on the platform. When I’ve owned other website, summer has always been the slowest period of the year. I’m hoping this is just a summer slowdown.

There’s only one thing I can do, and that’s to keep writing. Too many writers give up when their views are down. If they kept writing, they’d likely be able to bring them back up again.

Don’t give up

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. This isn’t a time to give up.

If your views are also down, don’t worry about it. Just keep writing?

Write fewer articles?

But one thought crossed my mind. If this is a summer slowdown, is it worth slowing down a little? Fewer views means lower earnings. Am I better off keeping my best stories until later in the year when they will likely earn more money?

Or should I just double down and aim for two articles a day?

I haven’t decided what to do yet. Maybe I’ll try a quick burst of 2–3 stories a day and see how it goes.
