To earn decent money on Medium, you need to be doing more than just writing stories. You need to keep finding ways to help your stories stand out from the crowd. The more they stand out, the more views you’ll get and the more money you’ll earn.

I spend a lot of time reading what some of the top writers have to say. If I find an awesome tip, I add it to my list. I then use that list to make sure I’m always using best practices.

If you want to supercharge your earnings in 2022, these 7 tips will help you. There are very actionable and easy to implement. Don’t make excuses. Get started with these today.

1. Remind subscribers of your old stories

I got this awesome tip from Jeofrey Ogire. This is a new feature on Medium that allows you to let your email list know about an older story.

This only works on a web browser and not on the app.

All you need to do is open a story you want to share, click on three dots at the bottom, and then select “Email to subscribers”.

Don’t use this too often. Once a week is enough. You shouldn’t be spamming your subscribers every day.

2. Change the title of your stories

I got this tip from an article that Matt Russell. In it, he shows how changing the title of one of his articles boosted his views from 224 to 2,084. That’s an almost 10-fold increase.

What you have to do is simply change the title of your article if it hasn’t got much traction. Doing so can give it a whole new lease of life. It can also earn you extra money.

Sometimes we have a great story but it doesn’t get clicked because the title isn’t very appealing. Changing it will hopefully make it more appealing.

Even better is to take more time to come up with a fantastic title.

3. Write Evergreen Content

I want to give a big thank you to Jared Kaska for this one.

If you write evergreen content, you can get views for years to come. If you write about something that’s time-limited, then you’ll get some views right away, but that will be it.

In Jared’s article, he talks about how he earned $200 on Medium in October 2021 without writing any stories. That’s the type of content you should be aiming for.

4. Write Content That Drives More Traffic To Your Articles

We all want more traffic to our articles. After all, more traffics means more reads, and more reads mean higher earnings.

If you write about articles that aren’t popular on Medium, then it should be obvious that you’ll get fewer views.

It should also be obvious that you’ll get more views if you write articles that tend to be popular.

So, what do readers want? According to Misbah S, we should be writing guides, opinion posts, how-to articles, and lists.

5. Use Top Writer Tags

Another tip for getting more views is to make sure your articles have Top Writer tags. Most tags won’t qualify you for Top Writer status, so it makes sense to use tags where you can.

Use These Tags If You Want To Get Top Writer Status

Become a top writer and you’ll get more views, more reads, and more money.

6. Submit Articles To Appropriate Publications

I only joined Medium on 30 October this year. I’ve already noticed that I’m getting more views from stories from publications than those I self-published. This makes sense as a new writer, as the publications have more followers than I have. This means more people will be exposed to my writing.

I’ll keep a close eye on this, as things can change over time. Some publications can fade away, and new ones can take their place. So keep experimenting. Adapt to any changes,

7. Do More Of What’s Working

Check your stats at least once a month and see what’s working for you and what isn’t. You should be able to see a pattern of what type of articles are getting the most views, and any publications that are particularly good for the content you write.

If certain stories are working well for you, then write more of those. You need to focus on what readers actually want to read.

You might find that a certain publication gives you the most views, so double down on that. Become a top writer for that publication and you’ll get a lot more exposure.

Conclusion

I plan to use all of the tips mentioned above, as well as extra ones that I discover. I think you should as well. If you want to make a full-time income from writing, you need to take it seriously. That means using everything at your disposal to get more views.

It’s not just about writing. There is a whole lot more that needs to be done to make sure your articles are seen by as many people as possible.

Most people won’t use these tips, so here’s your chance to get ahead of the crowd.
